Year of the Pig Party Round-Up
It’s a very busy time of year in our city. We’ve got dineLA (ending tonight), the start of awards season, MLK parades, and of course, the Lunar New Year. Because Los Angeles celebrates such a wide diverse cultural population, this coming week and month is packed with colorful and exciting activities to honor the Year of the Pig on the Chinese calendar. Celebrants are hoping for a year of achievement, happiness and prosperity. On that note, let’s get to celebrating. Here are just a few of the best places in LA to celebrate Year of the Pig.
Get ready for a spectacular Chinese New Year kick-off tonight in Beverly Hills. In its eighth annual celebration, audiences will be inspired by beautiful and traditional performances, taking place at the historic Saban Theatre. Acts include the Chinese Peking Opera and Peking Opera Fashion Show performed by the Beijing Liangxiang Culture, Chinese folk dance, martial arts and folk music performed by the Tianjin Folk Orchestra. Tickets are $10 - get’em at the door tonight. The Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau, Beijing Association for Culture Exchange, Tianjin Association for Cultural Exchange, Hebei Association for CulBeijing Association for Cultural Exchange, with the support of the Chinese Consulate of Los Angeles together present this grand evening.

The Original Farmers Market is hosting an afternoon of Lunar New Year festivities. Traditional lion and dragon dances, live musical performances featuring traditional Chinese instruments (guzheng, pipa and flute) and the unveiling of a handmade pig statue (created by the Farmers Market Facilities craftsmen), to be displayed permanently, ring in the Year of the Pig. The Market’s Chinese restaurants China Depot and Peking Kitchen will show how to make dumplings, and samples will be offered. Visit the Art 2 Go station in the plaza for a Chinese calligraphy demo and craft projects.

Crustacean Beverly Hills is honoring the Lunar New Year with a special good luck menu crafted by House of AN’s Master Chef Helene An and Chef Tony Nguyen. Traditional dishes, which will pay homage to the Lunar New Year history and represent good luck, prosperity and longevity include An’s Famous Garlic Noodle with Crab, an 8-hour massaged suckling pig served with good luck sticky red rice, green onion confit and a truffle ponzu, lemongrass steamed Chilean sea bass, and to complete the meal you indulge in The Tangerine, a Mandarin puree with lychee, coconut and Tahitian vanilla, for happiness and abundance. Menu prices are set at $88 or $198 (excluding tax and gratuity).

An excellent and obvious place to celebrate the Chinese New Year is in Chinatown (along North Broadway) where you can view the traditional Golden Dragon Parade. All ages will marvel in the colorful floats of reds and golds. According to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles, nearly 1.5 million persons of Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese descent in Southern California celebrate Lunar New Year day. Check the parade route before arriving so you can plan where to sit. Or purchase grandstand tickets here for $35 each.

Guests can choose from WP24’s signature menu items including squid ink shrimp steamed dumplings, roasted Peking duck garnished with golden pineapple, and scallions, sesame bao buns, a specialty cocktail themed to Year of the Pig, and a mochi waffle dessert. It’ll be a night to remember and good fortune as the restaurant welcomes live dragon dancers in full traditional Chinese costume to perform in honor of the new year.
